Long-term rental: How it works

If you need a car for a longer period of time, long-term rentals make sense. On the one hand, there is the classic long-term rental, which is suitable for short periods of a few weeks and is usually cheaper than a daily rental. Classic providers are SIXT or Hertz, for example.

On the other hand, car subscriptions are becoming more and more established. It is ideal for long-term periods of more than three months and offers many advantages over classic long-term hire. The costs are significantly lower in the long term, everything related to the car is already included in the fixed monthly price, family and friends can also take the wheel free of charge and there are no additional charges for a navigation system or journeys abroad. Even more importantly: with a car subscription, the car is registered to you, i.e. you can also apply for a residents' parking permit without any problems.

Long-term car hire for business customers

Business customers also benefit from car hire in Switzerland in a variety of ways. Whether business travellers who are in the country for a few months on business or employees who regularly commute long distances - long-term rental offers companies flexible mobility solutions. The car subscription is also ideal for temporary use, whether for projects or for specialists working temporarily in Switzerland.

The all-in-one package includes insurance, taxes, service, cantonal redemption and tyre changes and saves valuable time when procuring and managing the fleet, as everything is included in one monthly instalment. With terms of 3 to 48 months and a flexibly adjustable kilometre package (350-3,250 km per month), the car subscription can be adapted to individual needs.

Questions and answers about long term rental

General information

How long can I rent a car for?

The duration of the long-term car rental and the car subscription varies depending on the rental company and contract, but also on your own subscription configuration. As a rule, however, the duration of a classic long-term rental is a few weeks. From a duration of more than three months, a car subscription is usually more suitable, as it is cheaper and more flexible. Contact us for a non-binding consultation.

What is included in the rental price?

While there are often many additional costs with a classic car rental, for example for driving abroad, access to the navigation system or additional drivers, such costs are always already covered with a subscription. The specific contractual conditions vary depending on the provider. However, costs such as basic insurance as well as maintenance and service are usually included in the rental price. It is important to find out the exact costs before booking and to check any costs for additional services.

Can other people drive your car?

With a classic car rental, you should check the contract conditions carefully. In most cases, an extra fee must be paid for additional drivers. With a car subscription from Carvolution, additional drivers are allowed in any case. Just note that they need a valid driving licence.

Are rental cars always fully comprehensive insured?

In Switzerland, liability insurance for rental cars is usually included in the rental price. This insurance covers damage caused by the renter and affecting third parties. Comprehensive insurance for rental cars, on the other hand, is not compulsory but is generally recommended. It covers damage caused by the renter and affecting the rental vehicle.

Can I also use the car subscription for an SME?

Yes, Carvolution offers subscriptions for private individuals and companies. You can purchase your company car or even an entire fleet from Carvolution. We will be happy to advise you if you have any questions.

Decision support: renting, leasing or buying

When does long-term rental make sense?

If you only want to drive your car for a few weeks, for example for an extended holiday, or just to try out a car, then a classic car rental makes sense. This is also a good solution if you need a car immediately, as it can take a few days for a car subscription to be registered and handed over to you. If you need the car for several months, a car subscription is the cheaper and more flexible solution.

What do I need to bear in mind for a long-term rental?

With a long-term rental, i.e. a classic car rental, you need to know that you will have to pay for additional costs, such as broader insurance cover, additional kilometres and additional drivers. In addition, it is not accepted in your canton of residence, so it is not possible to obtain a blue parking card. Contract conditions can be very strict, so check carefully.

Costs: For a long-term rental, you should pay close attention to any additional costs.
Contract duration: What is the minimum length of time you can keep the car for, and what charges will apply if you want to keep it for longer?
Condition of the car: With a car subscription, the car is new or as good as new. In the case of a long-term rental, the car may be considerably older.
Insurance: Check which insurances are included in the rental price. Additional insurance may be required in order to be fully covered. With the Carvolution car subscription, you are in the best hands with Mobiliar; you choose the deductible yourself.
Registration: With a long-term rental, the car often comes with AI (Appenzell Innerrhoden) plates. This can make it difficult if you drive across the border or want to apply for a residents' parking permit. With a car subscription, your name is on the vehicle licence and the car is redeemed in your canton of residence.
Customer service: If the worst comes to the worst, you want to be well advised in the event of an accident or other incident. If you opt for a car subscription, you can reach us by phone, online or via the app.

Should I rent a car instead of buying one?

Which solution is best for you depends on a number of factors. Renting or taking out a subscription often makes sense if you only need the car for a few months or a few years. It also involves fewer risks and costs than buying.

Should I rent a car instead of leasing?

The best solution for you depends on a number of factors. A rental or subscription usually offers more flexible contracts and lower costs than leasing. However, vehicles are pre-configured and cannot be customised. Depending on your personal needs, a rental or subscription may be more suitable.
