LED, halogen headlights or xenon - if you want to buy a car today, you have several options when it comes to lighting. But what exactly are the advantages and disadvantages of each option? To help you understand, we'll introduce you to the different types of headlights.
Halogen headlights - The bulb 2.0
The halogen light system is, in a sense, the further development of the incandescent bulb in the vehicle. Contrary to the assumption that they are now obsolete, halogen headlights are still the most commonly installed of all the options. They are available as standard equipment at no extra charge when buying a new car and are inexpensive to replace. On the other hand, they only have a short service life and shine far less brightly than xenon or LED. In the dark, vehicles equipped with halogen headlights come towards you with the familiar yellow light. Of course, their performance does not come close to that of modern LED or xenon solutions, but they absolutely fulfil their purpose and are therefore still standard.
Advantages and disadvantages: xenon headlights
Those who place more value on appearance will tend to go for xenon headlights. These have been installed for more than 30 years and have been continuously developed. They look stylish and make driving safer. The light that a xenon headlight produces is similar to daylight. This makes it more comfortable for our eyes and provides contrast enhancement in good visibility conditions. Because they have a longer range than halogen lamps, xenon headlights warn you earlier of potential hazards in your path. However, the eyes of oncoming drivers can suffer from the bright light. Although xenon headlights have automatic headlight range adjustment, on slopes or bends oncoming drivers are often dazzled. Another disadvantage of xenon headlights: the high blue content in the light leads to a lack of contrast and thus poorer visibility in fog.
LED headlights better than xenon?
Vehicles with white lights, which usually come with progressive and stylish lighting concepts, othis to their LED headlights. Modern headlamps with LED lights are mainly installed in high-priced vehicles. Compared to the other two types of headlamps, they are still relatively new on the market. In addition, they have one major advantage: their lifespan. Unlike xenon bulbs, LED headlights are designed to work for the lifetime of a vehicle.
They are about 90% more efficient than incandescent lamps, which is of course a big plus in times when sustainability and environmental protection are becoming increasingly relevant. They do not need to be replaced - unless the damage is caused by external factors and affects the entire system, for example due to an accident. Even if damage or a defect only affects individual components, the LED headlamp must be replaced completely. And that costs money, with prices often in the mid-four-digit range. It is no longer possible to just change the bulb yourself.
At the moment, ever lower production costs are leading to lower prices, which means that LED headlights are increasingly becoming the standard. However, they do not have any more advantages or disadvantages than xenon headlights. In the end, it's a matter of personal taste and how much you're willing to spend.
