You’ve probably noticed the small, round white sticker with “CH” on some cars. But did you know that it's recommended within the EU – and even mandatory outside of it? This article explains what’s behind it, why it’s more than just a decorative item – and how it can save you trouble (and maybe even a fine) when driving abroad.

Why the CH sticker is mandatory abroad

The Vienna Convention on Road Traffic, in effect since 1968, regulates that vehicles used internationally – meaning vehicles driven abroad – must carry a clearly visible country identifier. A national coat of arms alone is not sufficient.

Many countries have the required country code integrated directly into the license plate – like the well-known EU band with abbreviations like D, F, or I. Switzerland is different: Swiss license plates display the canton code and the Swiss coat of arms, but not an internationally valid country code.

With Switzerland’s accession to the Vienna Convention, the rule is clear: Swiss vehicles must display an internationally recognized country code when driving abroad – in the form of a CH sticker or magnet. CH stands for “Confoederatio Helvetica,” the Latin name for Switzerland.

The CH sticker or magnet is the only officially recognized country identifier for Swiss cars abroad. In many countries – especially outside the EU – it is mandatory. Even within the EU, it is strongly recommended to avoid misunderstandings or issues.

Yes, we know: most people leave it off for aesthetic reasons. Still, the rule applies – if you drive abroad without the CH marking, you risk fines or problems at checkpoints or in the event of an accident.

Where do I have to place it?

The CH sticker or magnet must be clearly visible, positioned horizontally, and placed on the rear of the vehicle’s body – but not directly on the license plate. A typical location is the tailgate (see image below).

Where can I get the CH sticker?

The CH sticker or magnet is easy to find and inexpensive. You can get it at:

  • gas stations

  • road traffic offices

  • car accessory stores or large hardware stores

  • online shops

Important: If you choose a magnet, make sure it adheres securely and doesn’t come off or shift while driving.

What about Carvolution?

At Carvolution, we ensure that your car meets all legal requirements for road use in Switzerland at the time of delivery. If you plan to drive abroad, additional regulations may apply depending on the country – such as the requirement to display a CH sticker or magnet. Since these rules vary by destination, it is your responsibility to check them before traveling and to equip the car accordingly.

For this reason, CH stickers or magnets are not included by default. If you have questions or are unsure, feel free to reach out – we’re happy to help.
