Sing leasing contract

A number of questions arise at the end of a leasing contract. What happens to the damage caused to the car? Can a leased car be purchased after the end of the contract without further ado? And would it have been possible to get out of the contract earlier? You will find the answers to all these questions on the blog.

The end of the leasing contract

If your leasing contract is due to expire soon, you should contact your leasing company about 2 to 3 months before it expires. This will ensure that everything runs smoothly and that any questions you may have are clarified. If nothing is agreed in advance, the car is usually returned to the lessor. If you wish, you may be able to buy it, depending on the contract.

It is also possible to terminate the leasing contract before the end of the contract. However, you can do this at the earliest 3 months after signing the contract and for an additional fee. From that point on, you have the option of terminating the contract with 30 days' notice. However, this solution is very expensive. The leasing company has the right to increase the rates retroactively because the depreciation of a car is not constant. When a car is new, it loses value much faster than it does after a few months of life. If you terminate the leasing contract prematurely, you have to compensate for the difference in depreciation until the end of the contract. So before you sign a leasing contract, you need to know clearly whether you want to lease the car for the full term of the contract.

Repossession

When you return your leased car to the lessor, a return protocol, also known as an acceptance protocol, is drawn up. The car will be inspected for damage, excess kilometrage and missing material, all of which are under your responsibility as the lessee. If you do not agree with the acceptance protocol, you can get a second opinion from a second garage or an independent expert.

In the case of a leased second-hand car, you must ensure that a report on the condition of the vehicle is drawn up when you take possession of it. Otherwise, at the end of the contract, you will not be able to prove which damage was already present on the car and which was not.

If your leased car has been damaged, you will have to pay for it and repair it in due time. As a general rule, damage exceeding CHF 500 must be reported to the lessor, but this is clearly stipulated in the leasing contract. You must also report any damage to your insurance company.
