Hydrogen cars

What is a hydrogen car? Are there already hydrogen filling stations? And is it something for the future? If you're also wondering what hydrogen fuel cell cars are all about, read this blog post and find out.

Hydrogen cars - how exactly does it work?

Currently, there are only a few expensive hydrogen cars on the market and the network of hydrogen filling stations is very small.

So let's get down to the question: how exactly does a hydrogen car work? They are essentially electric vehicles. What is the difference? Simply put, a fuel cell and a hydrogen tank are installed in the vehicle, which produces the electricity needed for propulsion while the car is in motion. In the fuel cell, the electric current is generated from hydrogen. The hydrogen and atmospheric oxygen react to form water, producing heat and electrical energy. The energy drives the electric motor.

Currently, the Hyundai Neco and the Toyota Mirai are available on the market. Mercedes also offered a hydrogen car, but withdrew it from the market.

Hydrogen filling stations - where are they?

There are currently seven hydrogen filling stations in Switzerland. Four more are to be built this year. Eight more are to be added during 2022. As you can see, the supply is growing. However, we are still a long way from a national supply of hydrogen filling stations in Switzerland or even in Europe. All countries are still in their infancy. It is therefore difficult to make a quick trip to France for a holiday with a hydrogen car.

Are hydrogen cars emission-free?

The hydrogen car is considered a Zero Emission Vehicle (ZEV). The electrochemical process produces no emissions. However, the emissions that occur during the production of the hydrogen must also be taken into account. Then the whole picture is again a little different. If the hydrogen is produced with natural gas, this is not necessarily good news. It is much better if the electricity comes from renewable energy. On the question of long-term substitutes for fossil fuels, hydrogen and fuel cell cars certainly offer an option. However, only if the energy comes from renewable energy sources such as photovoltaics, wind and water power, solar thermal energy, geothermal energy and biomass.

Carvolution does not offer hydrogen cars in the car subscription at the moment. But as soon as the demand is there, they will certainly be offered. Are you interested in a hydrogen car? In the meantime you find here all our cars.
