Cantonal Differences
License plate transfers are regulated at the cantonal level. Some cantons allow transfers without restrictions. In others, only plates with numbers over 10,000 can be transferred. Unfortunately, a few cantons completely prohibit transfers. You can find an overview here.
Costs of License Plate Transfers
We do not charge any additional fees for transferring your own licence plates. Only the official fees of the respective canton are passed on. The costs vary from one canton to another. You can find an overview here.
Process for License Plate Transfers
To ensure a smooth transfer, please follow these steps.
Before the Vehicle Handover
To request the transfer of your license plate, we need a form for the road traffic office. If you already have your plates, we prepare the form and complete it together on the day of the vehicle handover. If your plates are already deposited at the road traffic office, we need the form in advance to retrieve them.
We also prepare an addendum to formally document the license plate transfer.
At the Vehicle Handover in Bannwil
If you bring your plates on the day of the handover, please also bring the vehicle registration document. On-site, we cancel the old registration and register the new vehicle for you.
If your plates are already deposited at the road traffic office because you canceled your registration in advance, you don’t need to bring anything. We will have the plates sent to us directly by the office, but we’ll need a completed form from you in advance.
After Returning the Vehicle at the End of the Subscription
After returning the vehicle, we always return the plates to the road traffic office of your canton of residence. You can use them immediately or within one year for a new registration. If you wish to leave them deposited for a longer period, you can request this directly at the road traffic office.
