Trunk full, back seat taken – but the passenger seat is still free? It's tempting to simply place that overstuffed bag beside you and hit the road. But few people stop to consider whether that’s even allowed – or more importantly: safe.
What many underestimate: Even during sudden braking, unsecured luggage can become a serious hazard. Whether in the trunk, on the back seat, or on the passenger seat – proper storage is essential.
In this post, we’ll show you how to store your luggage safely – and which practical tools make it easy.
Proper Packing Is a Skill!
In the trunk, the rule is: place heavy items at the bottom – and ideally, don’t stack your luggage higher than the top edge of the back seat. This keeps your view clear and reduces the risk of luggage being thrown forward during sudden braking. If you want to be extra safe, use tension belts or securing straps to hold everything in place.
Luggage should only be placed on the back seat if there’s absolutely no space left in the trunk. Even a 1.5-liter water bottle can turn into a 20-kilogram projectile in a head-on collision. So if you do need to store bags or other items on the back seat, make sure to secure them with a seatbelt or tension strap.
To avoid using the back seat for luggage in the first place, why not take a look at our cars with extra-large trunks – perfect for anyone who likes to travel safely and neatly.
And Finally: The Passenger Seat. This area also requires caution. Luggage on the passenger seat must not obstruct the driver’s side view or the right side mirror. As always: secure any loose items – whether with the seatbelt, tension straps, or a suitable net.
The Practical Helpers
When the trunk, back seat, and passenger seat aren’t enough, there are handy solutions: Whether for a vacation, a move, or your next adventure – a roof box or tow bar carrier gives you extra storage space with ease.
To mount a roof box, your car must be equipped with the right roof rack setup, such as roof rails, fixed points, or clamp feet. Using a tow bar rack requires – of course – a tow bar.
At Carvolution, you’ll find both – we offer cars that are fully prepared for roof boxes and tow bar racks. That way, your car subscription fits your lifestyle perfectly.
