Better visibility, more comfortable boarding, lots of space, more safety: there are numerous reasons why SUVs are so popular. The compacts in particular are on the rise. These are the big stars among the small SUVs.

Small SUVs are currently making a big splash. They are one of the most popular cars because they combine many advantages. The various terms surrounding small SUVs (Sport Utility Vehicles) can be confusing. Mini-SUV, Micro-SUV, Compact-SUV or Crossover are the various terms in circulation. But they all mean the same thing: they are vehicle types that offer a raised seating position, have the appearance of off-road vehicles, but are compactly built. For industry experts, the trend shows one thing above all: car drivers today make much more pragmatic decisions than they did just a few years ago. Whereas a vehicle used to be a status symbol, now it should above all be practical and inexpensive. "The car should make everyday life easier and fit changing needs," says Carvolution co-founder Léa Miggiano.

At Carvolution, we are also feeling the high demand for compact SUVs. "Compact SUVs, i.e. somewhat smaller SUVs, are particularly popular with customers from urban regions," says Léa. They make parking easier, for example. Especially in narrow parking garages, it is rather difficult with large vehicles. "The smaller SUVs offer families enough space, pensioners appreciate the easier access, and dog owners depend on a large boot," she continues. It is known that SUV drivers also appreciate the good visibility and the increased feeling of safety.

Car manufacturers have long recognised the need for "small big cars" and have developed corresponding models. Typical examples are the Renault Captur (currently available on subscription at a special price from CHF 544.- / month), which was introduced in 2019, or the Ford Puma (from CHF 499.- / month), which has been available since 2020. These are classic crossovers that combine the advantages of coupés and SUVs. The most important thing, of course, is that the car fits one's needs. We also offer a wide range of compact SUVs: And if your personal needs change, the Carvolution car subscription offers you the flexibility to change cars.

What distinguishes compact and mini SUVs?

As a rule, they have an automatic transmission and, unlike most large SUVs, front-wheel drive instead of all-wheel drive, which makes the car lighter and also more fuel-efficient. The front-wheel drive also comes from the fact that the purpose of mini and compact SUVs is not primarily off-road capability, but normal traffic. Moreover, most of them are petrol-driven. Diesel or electric vehicles are still unusual in this category, with the Dacia Spring mini-SUV being an exception.

How does Carvolution feel the trend?

Small SUVs are now among our most popular cars. While it used to be true that the bigger the better, SUVs have become much smaller in recent years. This also corresponds to the need in cities, where smaller vehicles are more agile. Rising petrol prices, lack of space and increased environmental awareness have reinforced the trend towards smaller SUVs. "When we launched the Dacia Spring at the beginning of the year, we sensed how great the demand was," Léa comments. Accordingly, the mini SUV was sold out at Carvolution very quickly.

Why a small SUV instead of a small car?

Many drivers attach great importance to a high seating position. This facilitates a good overview and thus also increases driving safety. It is also easier to get in and out of SUVs, which older people particularly appreciate. For families, the size of the boot plays an important role, so that everyday life does not become an eternal game of Tetris. The large load volume also makes dog owners happy: the dog crate has no problem in the boot of the mini-SUV.

Are SUVs safer?

Yes, SUVs - even the smaller ones - have a larger crumple zone. The elevated seating position gives drivers a better overview and thus an increased sense of safety. The vehicles also offer high-quality equipment and driving assistants that massively increase safety.

What are the costs of a compact SUV?

On the one hand, the compact design and the absence of all-wheel drive have the effect of lowering the purchase price. On the other hand, lower weight means lower fuel consumption. In short: compact or mini SUVs are convincing with their many advantages and yet are easy on the wallet. In terms of price, the smaller SUVs are cheaper than large SUVs, but still slightly more expensive than small cars. For comparison: The Ford Fiesta ST-Line X Mild-Hybrid with automatic transmission is available in the Carvolution car subscription from CHF 429.- / month. The popular compact SUV Renault Captur costs from CHF 544.- / month with our subscription.
